New Masters Course in International Sexual and Reproductive Health
Course Commences: 15th September 2008
The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine has recently launched a new Masters Course in International Sexual and Reproductive Health.
The MSC in International Sexual and Reproductive Health (MISRH) is a postgraduate course, which is run at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in partnership with the Division of Perinatal and Reproductive Medicine in the School of Reproductive and Developmental Medicine of the University of Liverpool and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The key aim of the programme is to enable graduates to develop knowledge and skills to provide leadership in the Sexual and Reproductive Health in middle and low income countries.
Programme Content
The core programme explores international aspects of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), including Maternal and Neonatal Health, Family Planning, prevention, diagnosis and management of STIs and HIV infection, adolescent health, gender and gender- based violence. Within the programme both public health aspects of SRH and health service provision are included. The programme also covers human rights and policy issues, as well as problem identification, strategic programming, implementataion and monitoring & evaluation of SRH programmes. In the 3rd semester there is an opportunity for students to develop and undertake a research project and write their dissertation in an area of special interest, which project possibly can be done overseas.
Programme Aims
The MISRH Programme aims to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding of health and health care issues in middle and low income countries which will enable them to practise at a senior level in international and sexual and reproductive health. The programme aims to enable students to develop capacity to work both individually and in teams to:
- Increase awareness, making 'visible' to politicians, professionals and the public the need for more effective use of knowledge and tools to impact on SRH and maternal and neonatal health indicators.
- Strengthen health systems to facilitate the implementation and scale up of good practice.
- Develop and apply new knowledge gained through research which meets local needs and directly informs policy.
The programme also enables students to develop the capacity to engage in further professional development and to adapt and respond positively to a rapidly changing international work environment.
Entry Requirements
The MISRH is open to graduates of health related and relevant disciplines. Participants should have at least 2 years experience in working in the haelth system at district, regional or national level. Non-graduates with a suitable training background (e.g. midwifery, clinical officer) are also eligible for consideration. We encourage applicants with extensive field experience and no first degree, provided they can demonstrate successful further study and personal development in their field as well as learning, analytical and communication abilities sufficient to benefit from the course.
