Phil joined the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as its Chief Business Officer in mid 2006 to establish its business office which manages the commercialisation of the School’s intellectual property and supports the operation of its trading subsidiaries Well Travel Clinics Ltd and LATH. As part of these ongoing activities Phil became interim CEO at LATH during 2008. He became a Director and has served on the Board of LATH from Feb 2008.
Phil Gould has a Special Honours Degree in Chemistry (1975) and then a PhD in Chemical kinetics (1978). He is a Chartered Chemist, an Honorary Professor of Health Sciences and a Member of the Institute of Directors. Phil has also been an expert witness in patent litigation, and a business advisor to UK universities.
Much of Phil’s career has been with blue chip pharmaceutical companies. He joined Reckitt and Colman Pharmaceuticals Division in 1978 working in the area of drug design. From 1980 to 1985, he held a range of scientific roles with Pfizer Central Research and worked with the teams that discovered and developed fluconazole. He then joined Lederle Laboratories (now part of Wyeth/Pfizer) as Senior Manager in Pharmaceutical Development working closely with the commercial and product supply groups on a number of global projects. In 1988 he joined Glaxo, progressing through functional, divisional and site roles, which increased in seniority. He was appointed to the post of Head of New Product Introduction, responsible for Glaxo's UK New Product Supply Technology across its 4 manufacturing sites, working closely with R&D, procurement and commercial groups across the world. In 1998 Phil moved into ‘biotech’ to become Chief Executive Officer of Provalis PLC, a pharmaceuticals and diagnostics group, leading it to its first profit in 2003 and to enter European markets for its pharmaceutical products and the USA market for its diagnostics products.
