Short Course in International Health Consultancy
Liverpool, UK
Course Dates:
11th to 30th May 2009
1st to 18th September 2009
Increasingly donors funding international development programmes and ministries of health are demanding high quality consultancy with an emphasis on the use of national consultants, whilst continuing to use international consultants to provide leadership, international expertise and quality assurance.
With extensive experience in managing technical assistance programmes as well as providing capacity development programmes, LATH and LSTM have jointly developed an intensive 3-week short course in International Health Consultancy.
As part of our commitment to delivering high quality technical assistance, we offer this course to further develop a pool of national, regional and international consultants whose work is robust, evidence-based and grounded in the reality of resource-poor settings.
The content of the course is organised in three parts to support student learning. In the first part the focus is on the broad technical areas with which an international consultant must be familiar. Topics covered include;
· Health Sector Reform
· Strengthening Health Systems
· Human Resources for Health – Global Challenges
The second part of the course is focused on the business side of technical assistance. This enables students to understand the ways in which technical assistance is procured and supplied. Topics covered include;
· What Makes a Successful Consultancy?
· Quality Assurance in the Consultancy Process
· Report Writing Workshops
· Legal & Risk Management Issues
In the third part of the course, students apply their skills as consultants by completing an assignment for a client organisation based in the North West of England. Organisations that have participated on previous courses as clients include;
· Sahir House (HIV Support and Information Centre)
· Refugee Action Liverpool
· Brook Advisory Centre (Sexual Health Advice & Contraception for Young People)
· Women’s Health Information & Support Centre (WHISC)
· Well Travelled Clinics (Holiday Health Advice, Vaccinations & Malaria Prophylaxis Service)
Student Feedback:
".. I learned quite a few new concepts and skills, was inspired several times during the course, and realized some important strengths that I was not so aware of as well as areas I need to work on. I also made a few friends and important networks.. Liverpool is one of the friendliest cities I've been too.. beautiful and great fun.. not bad for three weeks!"
